classics #8

In 1997, shortly after the release of their second album, Portishead performed a live concert at New York’s Roseland Ballroom accompanied by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It was released the following year as a live CD and VHS and has since become one of the most famous live concert recordings of the 90s.

The set captured the band recreating their often heavily sampled and sequenced music in such a way that it even exceeded their original album recordings. Choosing just one track from it is tough, but “Roads” is probably the best in showing just how beautiful and fragile Beth Gibbons‘ voice can be.
